Caring for Gold-Tone and Fashion Jewelry

Keep it dry, store it right, and clean it gently. That's really all it takes for everyday pieces to stay bright for years instead of weeks.

Fashion jewelry doesn't need much, but it does need consistency. The pieces that last years all share a few habits: they stay mostly dry, they get stored, and they get an occasional wipe-down.

Water is the big one. Take jewelry off before you shower, swim, or do dishes, and put it on last, after perfume and lotion. Moisture and chemicals slowly dull gold-tone finishes, and you can't polish that away.

Give pieces a quick wipe after wearing. A soft, dry cloth takes off skin oils and the day's residue, and it takes ten seconds. Way easier than a full cleaning session later.

Store pieces separately, or at least apart. A little zip-top bag with an anti-tarnish strip beats any fancy cleaner. Chains in a pile scratch each other and tangle into knots nobody wants to undo.

For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Rinse, pat dry with a lint-free cloth, and let everything air dry fully before storing. Never soak gold-tone or glued pieces.

Once a month, do a ten-second check: clasps, prongs, posts. If something feels loose, stop wearing it until you can sort it out. A loose prong is a lot easier to deal with than a missing stone.
